How to Calculate GATE Score: Formula, Examples & Calculator

Your GATE score is not the same as your GATE marks. Marks are what you scored on the paper (out of 100). The GATE score is a normalized number out of 1000 that accounts for exam difficulty and the performance of other candidates.

The GATE Score Formula

The official formula used by IITs to calculate your GATE score:

GATE Score = 350 + (900 x (M - Mq)) / (Mt - Mq)

Where:

M = Your marks obtained (out of 100)
Mq = Qualifying marks (25 for General/OBC-NCL, approximately 16.67 for SC/ST/PwD)
Mt = Mean marks of the top 0.1% candidates (or top 10, whichever group is larger)

If your marks M are below Mq, your GATE score is 0. You did not qualify.

Worked Example 1: General Category

Suppose you scored 52 marks out of 100 in GATE CS. The qualifying marks for General category are 25, and the top 0.1% mean is 78.

Score = 350 + (900 x (52 - 25)) / (78 - 25) = 350 + (900 x 27) / 53 = 350 + 458.49 = 808.49

A score of 808 puts you roughly in the top 2-5% of candidates, which is competitive for most IIT M.Tech programs.

Worked Example 2: SC/ST Category

A candidate scored 30 marks. SC/ST qualifying marks are approximately 16.67, and the top 0.1% mean is 78.

Score = 350 + (900 x (30 - 16.67)) / (78 - 16.67) = 350 + (900 x 13.33) / 61.33 = 350 + 195.56 = 545.56

What Your Score Gets You

PSU recruitment has specific score cutoffs. ONGC typically requires 600+, IOCL requires 500+, NTPC requires around 500+, and BHEL around 450+. These numbers shift slightly each year depending on candidate pool size.

For IIT M.Tech admissions, the score matters less than your rank. Top IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur) typically admit candidates with AIR under 500-1500 depending on the branch. NITs go deeper, often up to AIR 5000-10000.

Your GATE score is valid for 3 years from the date of result announcement. You can use a single qualifying score to apply to PSU jobs and M.Tech admissions across multiple admission cycles.
