How to Calculate GATE Percentile - Formula With Worked Examples

GATE percentile tells you what percentage of candidates you performed better than. It is not the same as your percentage of marks. A percentile of 95 means you scored better than 95% of all candidates who appeared for your paper.
The Percentile Formula
Percentile = ((N - r) / N) x 100
Where:
- N = Total number of candidates who appeared for the paper
- r = Your All India Rank (AIR)
Worked Example 1
You got AIR 500 in GATE CS, and 2,20,000 candidates appeared.
Percentile = ((2,20,000 - 500) / 2,20,000) x 100 = (2,19,500 / 2,20,000) x 100 = 99.77 percentile
An AIR of 500 out of 2.2 lakh candidates puts you in the 99.77th percentile. That is competitive for top IIT M.Tech seats.
Worked Example 2
You got AIR 15,000 in GATE ME, and 1,50,000 candidates appeared.
Percentile = ((1,50,000 - 15,000) / 1,50,000) x 100 = (1,35,000 / 1,50,000) x 100 = 90.00 percentile
A 90th percentile means you beat 90% of candidates. This is typically good enough for NIT M.Tech programs but may fall short for top IITs.
Worked Example 3: Small Paper
You got AIR 200 in GATE AG (Agricultural Engineering), and 8,000 candidates appeared.
Percentile = ((8,000 - 200) / 8,000) x 100 = (7,800 / 8,000) x 100 = 97.50 percentile
Notice the difference: AIR 200 in CS (2.2 lakh candidates) gives 99.91 percentile, while AIR 200 in AG (8,000 candidates) gives only 97.50 percentile. The same rank means very different things depending on the size of the candidate pool. This is why percentile is more useful than raw rank for comparing performance across papers.

Historical Total Candidates
The number of candidates affects your percentile for the same rank. More candidates means a higher percentile for the same AIR.

These ranges are approximate and vary by branch. GATE CS has more candidates than GATE AG (Agricultural Engineering), so 90th percentile in CS means beating 9 lakh+ candidates while in AG it might mean beating only 7,000.
